button-print-blu20 How to make *.sh files executable

Sometimes when I extract files from ISO’s or tar.gz files, I end up with .sh files which won’t execute.  Not been a regular Linux user, I forget everytime how to fix this situation – sometimes I use FileZilla, but the much better and quicker method is like this:-

  • Download or transfer the files that you are going to execute, either to a Desktop folder or your Home drive
  • Open a Terminal session (in SUSE right click the desktop, KDE click the K-icon and choose Konsole)
  • Change to the target folder
  • Type chmod +x filename.sh to change the attributes
  • Then type  ./filename.sh to execute the file
