button-print-blu20 Playing Games in Linux - Steam for Linux

Up until a few days ago I had no idea that the PC and Linux games industry was still going strong – I thought that the XBox & PlayStations had taken over the world.

Since then I have been reading about Steam, more specifically Steam for Linux.

What is Steam?

Steam is an On-line entertainment platform which allows players to buy & download games for PC, Mac and Linux.  Your Steam account will track your purchases and in the event of a system failure, you can re-install your purchased games. More than this, it is a community for Chat, Gaming and Sharing.

To see what games are available right now, check out this link.

How do you install it?

The Mac & PC clients can be installed on their native Operating Systems, but Linux takes a little more effort. The supported following platforms are listed here.

I tried to install it myself on Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit, following this guide – but came unstuck until I found this cheat sheet which works even on my standard graphics card.

Here is the Linux Steam Forum too..

Next year Valve are bringing out a native Steam OS and their very own hardware and controllers.
